Frequently asked questions
How much does a plumber cost in Hamilton?
The cost of a plumber depends on the type of job, the parts needed and how long the work takes. Optiplumb charges $100 + GST hourly rate for standard plumbing work during business hours and does not charge a call-out fee. After hours call out rates apply. For larger projects such as bathroom renovations, new builds and hot water cylinder replacements, our in-house estimator prepares a written quote before work begins, so you know the cost upfront with no hidden fees.
Do you offer emergency plumbing in Hamilton?
Yes. If you have a burst pipe, a major leak, a blocked toilet or no hot water, call Optiplumb on 0800 678 475. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5pm, and we also have after-hours availability - the first hour minimum charge for this is $230 + GST. Our plumbers are based across Hamilton and the surrounding areas, so we can usually reach you quickly. While you wait, turn off the water at the toby, the main shut-off valve usually found near your front boundary, to limit damage.

Are Optiplumb's plumbers licensed?
Yes. In New Zealand, sanitary plumbing must be carried out by a person authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). Optiplumb's team includes certified and licensed plumbers, and founder Duncan Leask is a Certified Plumber, Gasfitter, Drainlayer and Backflow Prevention IQP. We are members of Master Plumbers and hold SiteWise Gold 2025/26 health and safety accreditation. You can ask any of our plumbers to show their NZ Practising Licence and check it on the PGDB public register.
When should I replace my hot water cylinder?
Most hot water cylinders last around 10 to 15 years, depending on water quality and cylinder type. Signs it may be time to replace yours include water leaking from the base, rusty or discoloured hot water, running out of hot water sooner than usual, rumbling or banging noises, or a relief valve that drips constantly. Optiplumb can assess your cylinder, advise whether a repair or replacement makes more sense, and install a new electric or gas unit.
How do I know if I have a hidden water leak?
The easiest check is your water meter. Turn off every tap and water-using appliance, note the meter reading, then wait an hour without using any water. If the reading has changed, you likely have a leak. Other signs include damp patches on walls or ceilings, mould or musty smells, warped flooring, lower water pressure, or the sound of running water when nothing is on. Optiplumb can locate and repair hidden leaks before they cause structural damage.
What temperature should my hot water be set at in New Zealand?
Under the New Zealand Building Code, hot water should be stored at 50°C or higher to control Legionella bacteria. Water delivered to bathroom fixtures in homes should be no hotter than 55°C to reduce the risk of scalding, which is usually managed with a tempering valve. Lower limits apply in early childhood centres, schools and aged care facilities. Optiplumb can check your cylinder settings and fit or replace a tempering valve if needed.
Do I need a building consent for plumbing work?
Many repairs and like-for-like replacements, such as replacing a toilet or vanity in the same position, are exempt from building consent under Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004. Adding new fixtures, moving plumbing during a renovation or plumbing a new build usually requires consent from your local council, such as Hamilton City Council, Waikato District Council or Waipā District Council. Optiplumb can advise whether your job needs consent as well as manage the plumbing side of the consent and inspection process.
Can I do my own plumbing in New Zealand?
Homeowners can only do a small amount of low-risk plumbing themselves, such as repairing or replacing taps, tap washers, ball valves and plugs, or installing a washing machine or dishwasher where no supply pipes need to be fixed or unfixed. All other sanitary plumbing is restricted work and must be done by a PGDB-authorised plumber. Unauthorised plumbing can result in fines of up to $10,000 and may affect your home insurance.
